4 day 3 nights Samburu game reserve and Olpejeta safari takes you to one of the lesser-known national parks, but is nevertheless teeming with life.It is situated alongside the Ewaso Nyiro River, there is plenty to attract wildlife from the surrounding savannah plains.The reserve is rich in wildlife with an abundance of rare northern specialist species such as the Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk and the beisa oryx (also referred to as Samburu Special Five).The reserve is also home to elephants and large predators such as the lion, leopard and cheetah,Then to Olepeta to see the Africa's Big Five and visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary.

Itineraries

Day 1

Nairobi – Drive To Samburu Game Reserve

After breakfast pick up at your Nairobi hotel, a safari briefing will follow on the adventures ahead. After the briefing, your safari adventure will begin as you depart by road driving across the equator from the Southern to the Northern Hemisphere, and onwards to the semi-arid region of the Samburu Game Reserve.The name Samburu is of Maasai origin, a ‘samburr’ is a traditional leather bag the Masai use for carrying honey and milk. This region is characterized by vast, open landscapes, dried riverbeds (depending on the season of the year) and its red volcanic soil.Rock outcroppings contrast against the dense woodland vegetation along the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River, the river that gives life to the reserve. The area is home to the Samburu tribe, who are ‘cousins’ to the Maasai people with their own distinct cultural traditions.Arrive at the camp or lodge in time for lunch, followed by some leisure hours for a siesta or swim before you depart for an afternoon game viewing drive, and return back to the camp or lodge before sunset. Day 2

Explore Samburu Game Reserve

This full day in the Samburu Game Reserve will be spent searching for the big five, the Samburu five and observing the vast unspoiled scenery during morning and afternoon game viewing Drives.The Park is plentiful with crocodiles that bask on muddy riverbanks and velvet monkeys that frolic in the late afternoon sun. Samburu is renowned for its rare species of fauna known as the ‘Samburu five.These five particular animals are usually only found north of the equator – the long necked gerenuk, the reticulated giraffe which is characterized by its liver-colored geometric patches defined by narrow white lines, the Grevy’s zebra which is smaller than the common zebra and looks more like a horse, the beisa oryx with black horizontal stripe running across its lower flank and the Somali ostrich males which have blue-grey necks and thighs.A camel-back safari is a specialty in Samburu, as well as a cultural visit to the Samburu people who depend on their cattle, goat, sheep and donkey can be arranged. Day 3

Samburu – Olepejeta Concervancy

Have your breakfast followed by a depart to Olpejeta. You will arrive for lunch and relaxation and later proceed with afternoon game drive. Ol Pejeta Conservancy is a 364sq km wildlife conservancy situated between the foothills of Mount Kenya and the Aberdares and its game-to-area ratio tops the Kenyan park and reserve league. Ol Pejeta has over 10000 large mammals and it is the only park where the big 5 and chimpanzees can be seen. It is also where the fastest growing population of rhino in Africa can be found. There are southern white rhino, about 80 endangered black rhino and in a special sanctuary there are three of the world’s last remaining northern white rhino. Meals and overnight at Sweetwater’s Serena Camp 5*.

Day 4

Olepejeta – Drive To Nairobi

Breakfast will be served at the camp, last game drive, after which you will depart by road to Nairobi. Driver to drop you at your hotel at Nairobi or transfer you at the Airport for your home bound flight. No lunch on the last day. END OF SAFARI
